Reading Response 4/16

                                      Reading Response

Book: Summer of Secrets
Author: Paul Langan

In the book, Summer of Secrets, Darcy Wills is a teenage girl who attends Bluford High School and doesn't live a normal life. After she met a boy named Brian Mason a few weeks ago, everything has changed. He invited Darcy to spend some alone time with her so when she said yes, that's when he attacked her. He pinned her against the couch and started to kiss her and touch her all over her body. After her dad came to save her, she was never the same, she now fears boys! Even though when people face tragedies like this during childhood and are usually scarred, she took this to another level and even attacked another boy named Troy who was being friendly towards her.
During the story, Darcy and her old friend Brisana went to the mall to catch up and go shopping but as they pass by a group of boys who try to flirt with them, she completely panics. Not only does she quickly leave without an answer but her heart is pounding with fear and she continuously looks behind her to make sure they weren't following them. And that's not all, she has been holding this secret for a long time with only her family knowing. Her friends are wondering what is her problem (especially Brisana and Troy), and all she does is lie. I understand that you're traumatized from that moment but you gotta understand that holding it and hiding is only going to make it worse, especially when it's eating you up emotionally.
I personally think that Darcy is being selfish with this matter and that she is overreacting, but i don't know what it's like to be traumatized as a child so I shouldn't really be judging her on this.
